Year End Review Mirror Image

Ahoy Matee…
It’s been a few years since I blogged on a regular basis, and I’ve been meaning to get this site up and running for quite a while now. I figure now is as good as time as any, being the New Year and all. Believe me everything I write on this here thing is pure “personal opinion”. In no way am I an expert at anything. I think I know a lot about music, I probably don’t. I think I have all the right ideas about what makes a great film, I don’t. I also think I’m an expert analysis on sports, again I am not. But I do have an opinion and that’s worth my weight in gold… I thought my first post would be a look back at the year that was 2008.

Firstly:
I enrolled in a Jewish Gym and began playing basketball on a regular basis once again. After a few months of struggle I sorta got my legs back and can almost compete like I used to. I have yet to find a cure for common aging.

Secondness:
With persuasion from others I started writing and playing music again. I gathered up the gang (Laurie, Darius, Scott, Keith) and welcomed an old friend Photobucket(Pherph/Ferf) into the fray. We began playing again and had a great first show at the Knitting Factory Photobucketin May. Shortly after we lost Keith as our lead guitarist. We sulked for quite a while and then moved on…sorta. We picked up another old friend,Photobucket Clark Russell to help with percussion and we recorded an EP/ demo “Oh Woolfy” in Silverlake in early Summer. In October we recorded again but this time in Fresno. We were in the midst of mixing the tracks when the audio engineer quit… “whoa is us”. This is the exact reason why I always end up quitting music. Again we pulled through and hopefully we will have something completed before Spring. I finally accomplished something that I had set out to do years and years ago. I performed at the infamous Starline in Fresno, CA. It’s such an exclusive venue (sarcasm) that for years, I had tried to get a show there with a number of bands and I was always denied. Then on December 27th Wings for the Queen took the stage and rocked the place….I think, for some reason I can’t quite remember the night too well.

Thirdest:
I saw a couple of great shows this last year and a couple of duds as well. For the first time in 7 years I didn’t attend at least 1 day of the Coachella Music Festival. It has sort of become a tradition amongst me and a couple of friends. This year those friends didn’t seem too interested in the lineup and weren’t willing to travel for the sake of tradition. Honestly, I don’t blame them. The best show of the year for me was Wolf Parade at the Fonda. We saw them back to back nights. The first night was pretty darn good, not the best effort I’ve seen of them but well worth the cost. I was a bit apprehensive about seeing them the next night because; I didn’t feel like driving to Hollywood again, didn’t feel like paying $10 for a small Cranberry and vodka , and how different could the set/sound be? Well I was glad that I went. Those boys put on an amazing display of rocketry, and not the type you do at summer camp while you’re in 5th grade. They played a different set list and did different variations of the songs they performed the night before. Absolute enjoyment. Honorable mentions go to Built To Spill at the Troubadour performing Perfect From Now On, Tokyo Police Club at the Detroit Bar, and Handsome Furs at the Troubadour. Some of the duds were Bishop Allen at The Echo (no energy and didn’t play a song off Charm School), Cold War Kids at Fingerprints, and Zach Galifianakis at 4th and B (late and only caught the last 3 minutes of the show. Purely our fault and in no way should it be blamed on Mr. Galifianakis).
